Beaverton Literacy Council (BLC) had its beginnings in the 1960's with four volunteers who tutored students one-on-one. In 1984, small group tutoring was started at the old Beaverton Library.
BLC currently has nearly 40 volunteers. Last year we served over 164 students from 29 nations in classes, small groups and one-on-one settings at locations throughout Beaverton.
BLC is registered with the Oregon Secretary of State as a nonprofit public benefit corporation (#651351-89) and with the Oregon Department of Justice as a charitable activity (#28076). BLC is a 501(c)(3) organization as determined by the US Internal Revenue Service.
Gift donations (monetary and in-kind) to the Beaverton LiteracyCouncil are usually deductible as charitable contributions.
BLC is a community-based all volunteer organization. Our volunteers, many of whom have been with BLC for many years, are trained to offer positive, encouraging tutoring experiences. Our board of directors handles administrative matters, leaving our tutors free to focus on working with students.
If you would like to make a difference and become a volunteer, we need you! The community's need exceeds our current capability. We have opportunities to work directly with students as a tutor, and on the administrative side of the organization.
